Art Pieces
As you might have already suspected, we're committed to doing things a little differently here, which is why aside from the art exhibits housed indoors we've also brought a variety of art pieces to the lanes and alleys of the Village. We commissioned a number of artists, sculptors and designers to go to work and create something of their own design for display, some for practical every day use, some to provoke thought and discussion, but others just really for fun.
Misting Post
The most obvious of our various art pieces scattered about are our 25 Misting Posts strategically located across Village South. Individually designed and hand painted, the designs take influence from their immediate surroundings, and blend in from the ground up with the art literally leaping off the canvas to the floor. The works truly come into their own during the Beijing summer when they dispense a cool mist to the appreciation of hot shoppers. Created by the 24 year old self-styled Beijing conceptual artist Pastrami (Li Anyuan), the posts reflect his disregard for the conventional and a promising future for the 798 based artist. We're very happy to display some of his first pieces here.
Misting Tree
When it came to designing the Village's Misting Tree, our first and foremost influence was taken from their real life counterparts. In an urban context, trees provide an element of calm, provoking social interaction and adding a personal touch to an otherwise busy environment. Their individual aesthetics and human scale allow them to subtly blend within its surroundings, yet still leave an impression on the minds of those who pass by. The mist produced is ethereal in form, yet real to the touch, providing relief from the hot summer months.
Within our design we recognize the cost levied on the environment by unavoidable urban development. As a society we sometimes forget how our world was before, how forests make way for cultivatable land, earth makes way for concrete, and trees make way for signposts. Our ethereal Misting Tree is a reinterpretation of this time before and pays tribute to its fallen real life counterparts, whilst symbolizing their continuing presence.
