The Tianjie Temple is the source for the common Xiamen slang expression for suffering a double loss, "No wife, no monkey." Legend goes that an impoverished student who lived in the temple had nothing but a trained monkey as his servant. One day, a wealthy man met the student by chance. Impressed by the student's hardworking spirit and polite monkey servant, the wealthy man decided to betroth his daughter to the student. To express his gratitude, the student killed his monkey to cook soup for his future father-in-law. However, the student's ruthlessness toward his monkey servant irritated the rich man. Finally, the student was left with no monkey and no wife.
