A 13,334-square-metre firefly-themed park for children, the first of its kind in China, has settled in the Yiqinggu Valley on Wenzeng Road, about 20 kilometers from downtown Xiamen.

The Xiamen Firefly Park re-opened on 15th June, 2011. It was first opened to the public in June of 2010 and had received more than 80,000 visitors until it temporarily closed down in September.

As the home to more than 10,000 fireflies, the park includes a 5,000 cubic meter firefly house and exhibition hall. It is not only a night-time wonderland, but also serves as an education center to raise the public's awareness of energy conservation.
On entering into the Firefly Theme Park, there is an Ecological Exhibition Hall where all kinds of firefly specimens and firefly ova are displayed. Children can even touch the aquatic fireflies.

Walking through the passage for observation in the darkness, children can see the fireflies flying in the sky, like stars.

Moreover, apart from observing the lightshow, you can also take part in the environmental awareness classroom where you can learn how the firefly maintains the environmental balance by controlling populations of pests such as slugs and snails, and the importance of saving it from environmental degradation. which is increasing daily.

The best time for visiting the Firefly Theme Park is late evening or early in the night time when its light-bearing residents come out and live up to their namesake. With nightfall, the firebugs gather in large numbers around tree groves and bushes of the park and shine their lights creating an interesting spectacle that children and adults alike tend to find themselves captivated with.

The firefly park opens for free to children under 16 years old every evening from 19:30 to 21:30, but every child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Besides, adults alone will not be granted entry to the park. As the park only allows 300 visitors to visit each day, reservations are required.
