The new industrious metropolis of Shenzhen is striving hard to establish its cultural roots. One such attempt is the He Xiang Ning Art Museum that was opened in 1997. He Xiang Ning (1878-1972) is considered China's most prominent female artist of all time. In addition to her artistic interests, she was also an ardent activist and revolutionary close to Dr Sun Yat Sen, who is known as the founding father of modern China.
In addition to hosting the prominent works of He Xiang Ning, the museum is also the hub of the Chinese contemporary art scene, showcasing many local experimental artists and famous international artisans, including Picasso. A short stroll across the road from the museum brings you to the Sculpture Park annex, a big open air exhibition centre mainly showcasing the fascinating and insightful works of Masters such as Zhu Ming's Taichi to prominent French conceptualist David Buren and his works titled On the Billows and Horizon.
Trendy art cities around the world are gradually turning to redeveloping disused factory space into chic modern art galleries and gatherings. Such conceptual projects include the kunstvereine in Germany and the more recent Factory 798 complex in Beijing. A similar concept was adapted by the Xiang Ning Art Museum in taking over disused factories in the surrounding area and converting them into an experimental public place where modern and cutting edge concept art is showcased from local and international artists. Known as the OCAT, it is a prominent attraction in Shenzhen and is the ideal funky hangout from which to gain a greater awareness of modern art in Asia.
