It occurs to few people that "Bugaoli" in Shanghai is in fact Burgundy, a French place name familiar to all, which is always related to wine, sunshine and manors; judging from the name, we can guess some information about the history and location of Bugaoli in Shanghai.

The French counterpart of Bugaoli is "Cite Bourgogne", a former province in French history that covers the regions including Rhone River Basin in the south of France and the west part of Switzerland today. Most of the houses built by Jianye Real Estate Company are middle or top grade community, whose residents are often emigrants or rich businessmen. However, the residents of Bugaoli are mostly Chinese. The name Bugaoli connotes the typical auspicious Chinese meaning of "rising higher step by step".

Influenced by the "Architectural Renaissance" in the 1920s and 1930s of China, namely, the trend of reviving the ancient architectural styles, or because of the promotion of commodity houses intended to be specially designed and built for Chinese clients, Bugaoli had been designed with two traditional Chinese decorative archways (pailou) at the entrances of the lanes. At that time, western-style residences were in vogue in Shanghai, yet Bugaoli developed a style of its own by treating the "architectural revival" as the fashion.

Built in 1930, Bugaoli has some of the features of the "New Shikumen (Stone-framed doorways)" buildings in terms of its style and structure. However, without any separate sanitation or gas system, it still belongs to the old Shikumen residences.
