The Beijing Deshengmen Watch Tower is located on the inner city northern wall's western section.
There used to be a gate tower here, but it was dismantled in 1921 and its platform in 1955. Deshengmen's barbican's northern and southern axis are extra wide (118 m), thus it wasn't necessary to dismantle them when Beijing's metro system was built. In 1979, it was proposed that the watchtower be dismantled but fortunately it has been kept intact as the last remains of the important Deshengmen Gate to Beijing.
