Jiangwan Stadium is located in the eastern part of Shanghai. When completed in 1935, known as Shanghai Stadium, was the Far East's largest stadium. It was also well-known as a major construction of the Greater Shanghai planning in 1930s. The urban planning was for the establishment of a new Shanghai Civic Center planned and designed by Chinese in a Greater Shanghai beyond the foreign concessions. The stadium features Chinese neo-classical architecture that is still unique in Shanghai today.
Jiangwan Stadium hosted the R.O.China the Sixth and Seventh National Games in 1935 and 1948, and P.R.China the Fifth National Games opening ceremony in 1983.
After the renovation completed in May 2007, the stadium hosted the X Games Asia 2007 (extreme sports) and became the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games closing ceremony venues.
