Designed by the French architectural firm Jean-Marie Charpentier and Associates', Shanghai Grand Theatre (SGT), a crystal palace laced up with strings of sparkling musical notes, is located on People's Square at the heart of Shanghai.  Positioned as an international stage dedicated to artistic excellence and creativity, and with a mission to present first class art works, provide best art experience and promote best art education, SGT has made continuous efforts to stage renowned artists, renowned performing groups and renowned works, so as to realize the vision to become the benchmark of theatres in China, label for urban culture of Shanghai and hub for cultural creativity.

Since its inauguration on August 27th 1998, SGT has staged over 6,000 performances for an accumulative audience of 10 million by the end of 2009. It has truly become a stage for world-class art works, a venue for international art events and a platform for arts education for the general public.

In 2005 Shanghai Grand Theatre Arts Group, consisting of three venues--Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Concert Hall and Shanghai Cultural Plaza, as well as four artistic affiliates including Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Ballet, Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and Shanghai Opera House, was established. It is a non-profit organization for performing arts. Since inception the Group has been the core organization of its kind in Shanghai and has strived to play a leading role in the performing arts sector by operating in accordance with art rules, market regulations and international practices, as well as creating and leveraging the synergy, interaction and clustering effect of the industry. The Group's comprehensive competitiveness has ranked top in China for two consecutive years.

With a total investment of 1.2 billion RMB, an area of 2.1 hectares and a total construction area of 70,000 sq. meters, SGT is home to 3 theatres inside: the Lyric Theatre with 1800 seats, the drama theatre that can seat 600 and the studio theatre of 300 seats. All sound and lighting devices were sourced from world famous suppliers. The stage in the Lyric Theatre, which has an area of about 1,700 square meters, including main stage, rear stage and left/right side stages, is one of the world's biggest, best equipped and most versatile automatic mechanical stages. Supporting facilities of the Theatre include the SGT Arc Banquet Hall (Sky Ball Room), Maxim's, Box Office and a big underground parking lot.

SGT is ISO9002 certified, and has been awarded many prestigious honors, such as "Organization with Social Responsibility" (for 3 consecutive times from 2000 to 2005), "National Demonstration Base for Cultural Industry" (2004), "National Advanced Cultural Organization" (2005), "Best Operated Theatre in China--Gold Prize" (2006) and "Base for International Publicity of the Municipality" (2008). SGT has been a proud member of AAPPAC-Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centres since 2000 and is elected as one of the Executive Committee (ExCo) members.
