History of the museum

    After the excavation of the mausoleum of Nanyue King in 1983, CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee and Guangzhou Municipal Government made a decision that a specialized museum would be built on the orginal site of the mausoleum of Nanyue King for protecting the mausoleum and displaying the precious relics unearthed from the mausoleum.
    In Marth, 1984. the project of the museum of the Mausoleum of Nanyue King was established by Guangzhou Municipal Government. To begin with, the government expropriated the land; This was followed by program desige, argument and screening; Finally, the government determined to adopt the program desiged by member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Urban Planning Bureau Engineer-in-Chief Mr.Mo Bozhi.

    The foundation laying ceremony of the museum was held on Demcember 27th, 1986, the first phase of the project was the reinforment and maintenance of the tomb.

    With the completion of the specilized exhibition hall on Feb.8th, 1988, the museum opened formally.

    In 1989, the Museum conducted a series of construction. For instence, the reinforment and maintenance of the tomb, the shed for the protection of the tomb  and the east corridor.

On Feb.8th,1993, the completion of main exhibition hall, namely the second phase of the project of the museum and the opening ceremony of the exhibition of treatures from the mausoleum and ceramic pillows donated by Mr. And Mrs Yeung Wing-Tak specalized exhibition marked the full completion of the Museum.

    The Museum plans to finish a series of reconstruction around its surrounding zone before 2010.  The reconstruction of the museum, mainly conducted according to functional layout,supporting facilities and environmental remediation, is aim to restore the orginal appearence of Xianggang Hill and continue the history context of the city.
