Founded in 1956, Wuhan Botanical Garden is one of the earliest national botanical gardens established after foundation of the P. R. China in 1949. It is located in at the bank of the East Lake, southern foot of Moshan Hill. The garden covers an area of 70 hectares and has planted nearly 4,000 species of various plants from home and abroad, which was regarded as the largest botanical resources collection center in central China region and one of three core research botanical gardens in China at present.


    Special gardens and beautiful horticulture spots have been formed these years. There are Aquatic Plant Garden, Rare Endangered Plant Garden, Chinese Gooseberry Garden, Ornamental Garden, Tree Garden, Pine and Cypress Garden, Bamboo Garden and so on. Many kinds of flowers are blooming almost over the whole year, and you can see various interesting strange and rare species growing vigorously in the large greenhouse, also a pleasure green overflowing around the Center Lawn, Moreover, many sorts of tourism facilities are available here and there. Up to present about 4,000 species have been introduced or cultivated. Since spring and fall coming, some magnificent exhibitions of famous flowers would be regularly held in the garden.


    WBG is the National Education Base of Pop-Science and the National Education Base of Science and Technology for Juvenile, and Hubei & Wuhan Pop-Science Education Base, Environment Education Base, Patriotic Education Base, State AAAA Tourist Attraction.


    WBG has achieved significant economic and social benefits in product spreading, technique consultation and training, plant propagation, scheme and design of afforesting work and construction, selling of some kinds of economic plant, landscape plant, seed and seedlings of ornamental plant.


    WBG has established close relationship of cooperation and exchange with famous universities and research institutes in 34 countries or regions, such as United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, etc. In 2007, WBG successfully held the Third International Conference of Botanical Gardens.
