Situated on a high mountain at the Tujia and Miao Autonomous Area in Qianjiang, Lesser South Sea is a fresh- water lake located at a place at anelevation of 670.5 metres. It was actually formed by an earthquick occured in the May of the sixth year of Xianfeng period (1856), Qing Dynasty. Even up to the present time, the result of this earthquick could be found on the Qiaoding Mountain. Known as the Dakuayan and Xiaokuayan, they are ranked as few of the well-preserved earhquick ruins in the world.
In this area also live the Miao ethnic group. They are all fond of singing folk song imbued with national colour and characterized by high-pitched, long-drawn-out and modulating tones. It is sometimes sung to give expression to the singers' deep love, their sincere desire and their wish for a good luck. The most popular form of singing is to sing in dialogue form, with one person questioning and the other replying. This form of singing is used sometimes to provide opportunities for young boys and girls to make friends or select their prospective spouses.
Of all the nationalities in China, the Miao claim the largest number of festivals, of which the major ones include the Autumn Fair and the Third Month Fair. As a traditional festival, the Autumn Fair is held on Liqiu (the Beginning of Autumn) every year. On this occasion, people of both sexes and all agesexchange festival greetings as they meet each other on the way. Besides, large numbers of people from far and wide flock to the venue to watch or participate in contests, such as swing, ladder-climbing, dragon dance and lion dance.
The Miao ethnics are reputed for their being skilled in embroiding and batik. The young girls of the Miao ethnic group like to adorn themselves with their home-made handicrafts.
For the people of Tujia ethnic group, a grand festival will be held every year on the days from January third to January fifteenth. The locals, young and old, woman and man, turn out in their holiday best to gather together on their village ground, singing and dancing happily for the occasion. The gala goes on until small hours. Each minority has a type of dance in its own style.Originated from the Bayu dance during the ancient times, the Baishou (Hand Waving) Dance has a remarkable fast, spirited pace, with many vibrating gestures and hand movements. The Tujia people are good at brocade-weaving and the pattern on their clothes reflect their paying homage to Greal Nature, their deep love for life and their favoueites including bird, fish, insect and flower.
Changshou Lake, the largest man-made lake in Chongqing, has an area of 90,000 square kilometres and, with more than two hundred islets, there are crisscross branching streams. Surrounded by hills around, all of the islets are densely wooded. As for the lakeside scenery, it is simply as enchanting as fairyland. Hence, the lake is remarked as "A Pearl in East Sichuan". Longshui Lake is located in the territory of Dazu County. Backed by the Bayue Mountains, it is benifited from the beauty of surrounding hills. With the islets spreading all over, the water-surface of the lake is dotted with egrets chasing after each other. The Satellite Lake is located in Yongchuan. On its south bank there is an orchid covering more than 3,000 mu of land on which grow the fruit-trees. On its north lies the Huanggua Hill where spread many scenic spots, including Strange Rocks, Chuanyan Cave, Baoziyan Waterfall and Peach-Blossom Islet. It is really a great pleasure to take a walk there.
In short, endowed with many other beautiful sceneries, such as Baiyun Lake on the Bishan Mountain, South Lake and East Hot Spring in Banan, and West Hot Spring in Tongliang, Chongqing has thus become so charming and attractive.
