Museum of Prehistory in Taitung City, was established in August 17, 2002, in situ archaeological sites belonging to the Field Museum building, referred to as the "Museum of Prehistory."

The museum is mainly to save Peinan site in Taitung established. July 1980, the Taiwan Railway Administration for the construction of the South Loop Peinan station (now the Taitung station), accidentally discover a large collection of relics of the Puyuma cultural sites. After inspection, the place is now uncovered the scope of Taiwan';s largest Stone Age sites.

Currently the museum is divided into three main themes to show different kinds of artifacts are from TaiwanNatural history, Taiwan and the Taiwan Austronesian prehistory. Museum built on the archaeological sites not directly, but on the other has a Peinan Cultural Park to save the ruins.

Museum of Prehistory to the architectural design is selected after the international competition, the architect is Michael Gerui Fu. About 10 hectares of land throughout the Museum, Museum of the east, the west is a cultural park.
