Located at the foot of Baiyun Mountain, alongside Lu Hu Lake, Guangzhou Museum of Art is the grandfather of artistic collections in Guangzhou, established 40 years ago. It has specific halls for the works of southern Chinese master artists such as Guan Shaoyue, Zhao Shao'ang and Li Xiongcai as well as classical painters from outside Guangdong such as Lai Shaoqi and Liao Binxiong.
The museum is an integrated facility consisting of a Chinese Calligraphy painting hall, a Thematic Exhibition hall, Foshan Ceramics hall and Sculpture showroom.

The Guangdong Museum of Art consists of twelve indoor exhibition halls covering an area of 8,000 square meters as well as an outdoor Sculpture Garden that is 5,000 square meters in size. Each year, the museum hosts nearly sixty exhibitions. The museum hosts a variety of exhibitions from smaller intimate looks at the work of contemporary artists to exhibitions larger in scale such as that of sculptor Henry Moore. Recently, the Guangdong Museum of Art has initiated a Triennial Exhibition of contemporary art, both Chinese and international.
It holds thousands of paintings, both oil and watercolour, calligraphies, prints, charcoal drawings, literary sketches, sculpture, inscriptions, rubbings and bronze ware; many of them invaluable.

The complete lack of English signage makes finding your way around the place something of a challenge, but museum staff are friendly and helpful.
